You've been laid off...now what?

 You've been laid off...now what?

1. Reject the premise that it's all about you
2. Work the problem
3. Lather, rinse, repeat

This is NOT an easy process, and each step is equally important. The process fails if you skimp on any one of them.

1. Reject the premise that it's all about you

There can be any number of reasons OTHER than performance that can lead to loosing your job...reduction in force, financial performance, market forces, poor project or budget management, company politics...the list goes on. But in order to effectively respond to the situation, it is vitally important to get up off the mat and enter the job search immediately with confidence and determination.

It's NOT you, it's them. (Probably.)

2. Work the problem

Update your resume, reconnect with your network, refresh your skill set, upgrade your wardrobe / appearance. These are all inexpensive (usually) and quick fixes you can make right now.

  • Get on Pluralsight and learn something new
  • Get on GitHub and create a new project (or contribute to an existing one)
  • Get on Stack Overflow and help somebody with a question in your area of expertise
  • Get on LinkedIn and network, find jobs, and contact Hiring Managers

3. Lather, rinse, repeat

Get up every morning, have some breakfast, take a shower, get dressed...and do it all over again. Demonstrate your tenacity and grit...every day. This will keep you focused on the future, and it will be seen by people in your network (and your family), and it will provide "proof of value" to not only them...but yourself.

This is a dark ride...and it could be a long one. Stay frosty.
